Why do I live? Has this question ever came to your mind? It come across my mind multiple times, and today, I want to share it. I wrote this article in the train on my way back to Jakarta. Train is one of my favorite place where you can reflect yourself 🙂.
I come to this thought as the officer in Bandung Station, give salute when the train was leaving. Right after I see that, I want to capture this moment, but I were not prepared to take the picture of this moment. Still, I give a thought, and I have 2 questions:
- What is the point of them in doing that!?
- Are they feel that their role is important?
For the first question, I don’t know about the goal of it, but for me, as railways customer, I feel grateful with what they have done, and maybe it is indeed their goal, to make the customer happy. How about number 2? After put more thought, I answered by myself that, we live in a system, where they are doing it as part of railways company and unnecessary to be because they do it voluntarily. Here, the railways management must think that it is important to boost the happiness of their customer, hence their action is important.
System is a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network, Oxford. I found that wikipedia has a better, clearer definition, A system is a group of interacting or interrelated elements that act according to a set of rules to form a unified whole.
Based on the definition, a system will fail when one of each component are not functioning as per expectations, hence, as long you do your role, your work is important because the system agreed that such function is necessary to ensure that our business are running well. In a system, do not expect that every decision are fit with our personal value and get ready to compromise with it. If as individual, the officer is not happy with that role, then why do they do it diligently?
Back to our life, why do you want to wake up every day to do something that you may not even like? For me, it is gratitude, I feel the value when I feel gratitude, and there’s a lot of source of gratitude in our life. For a student, it can be a final score, for an employee, it can be the cash bonus, for a Pastor, it can be when he can safe more people, and more! Gratitude come when you value what you got, both material and spiritual, and you feel that you deserved it.
Be happy with what you have! 🙂
